What are some things to look for in a good online bass lesson website?

When you’re looking for an online bass guitar lesson website, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, make sure the website offers lessons at your skill level. If you’re a beginner, look for websites that offer beginner-level lessons.

Second, check out the quality of the video and audio content – you want to make sure it’s clear and easy to follow.

How do I choose the best bass lessons online?

Before you buy bass lessons online, you have to determine your goal and how to achieve it. Some programs teach popular songs and some have detailed theories. Another consideration should be the way that the site works itself. Check if the site offers benefits you might find useful.

For example, does the site offer live-streamed bass classes? Is all the material pre-recorded? Is there any kind of progress checker built into the website?

Everyone learns differently, so you should find what suits you the best. In addition, the instructors can be extremely important, you have a little time to study.

What to Consider When Choosing Online Bass Lessons

-The level of the lessons: Are you a beginner? Look for websites that offer beginner-level lessons.

-The quality of the video and audio content: Make sure it’s clear and easy to follow.

-Free trials or money-back guarantees: This will give you a chance to try out the website before making a commitment.

-Reviews from other bass players: Read reviews from other bass players to get an idea of what the website is like.

-How do I learn best?: Everyone learns differently, so find what suits you best.

-Instructor qualifications: Make sure your instructor is qualified and experienced.

Can you teach yourself to play bass guitar?

Yes, you can teach yourself to play bass guitar. However, doing things all on your own can have its drawbacks.

First of all, a good bass guitar teacher, whether that’s online, in person, or even from a book, can guide you in a way that you often can’t guide yourself.

They can show you where you’re going wrong and what you need to do to improve. They can also suggest new material for you to look at and point you towards things that will broaden your horizons.

So, if a teacher is so great why do so many people choose online bass guitar lessons these days?

Simply put, traditional lessons, either in private or over zoom, are expensive. And online bass lessons are a good way to get the best of both worlds.

After all, you get taught by a real teacher and you get a more affordable price.

However, it’s not always that simple.

Often a bass player (a beginner bass guitar player in particular) will not be sure if they want to pursue the bass seriously or for a long time.

This means they are reluctant to sign up for a big subscription package with an online bass lessons website.

What they end up doing is testing the waters with online bass courses by learning off free videos on YouTube or other parts of the internet.

There are some high-quality video lessons online but they are often made for a mass audience and likely, won’t address the specific concerns that you have.

What these lessons cover are broad topics that a wider audience finds appealing.

This is the biggest trade-off with free online bass lessons.

What you save in cost, you often lack in specificity.

All of this means you have to weigh up the pros and cons and decide what the best thing is for you to further your bass guitar skills.

Best Online Bass Guitar Lessons

If you don’t have time for a long read and you’d prefer a quick summary then I’ve got you covered.

The best online bass lessons websites are…

  • Scott’s Bass Lessons – Most comprehensive
  • Artistworks – Best feedback and most likely to progress
  • Bassbuzz – Best for beginners
  • Bass Players Study Group – Best personalized feedback
  • TalkingBass – Best mixed of free and paid material

Now that we’ve seen the benefits of learning bass online, let’s take a deeper dive into some of the websites that offer online bass lessons.

JamPlay

JamPlay which began life in 2006, is a famous online learning platform for guitar and bass.

While the majority of this site has fantastic instructors, JamPlay is known for its outstanding bass players in particular.

Just to start, you’re getting lessons from Bryan Beller of Dethklok, David Ellefson of Megadeth, Billy Sheehan that plays for Steve Vai, Freebo that plays for Neil Young.

All the material is split into four distinct teaching phases.

Phase 1 is all about the basic mechanics of playing the bass guitar.

You look at technique, posture, tuning and other basic concepts.

Phase 2 is all about learning some style-specific bass lines. There’s lessons on blues, rock, funk and slap.

Phase 3 is centered around learning actual music. There are loads of backing tracks that can be slowed down to whatever tempo you need before bringing them back to the original tempo.

Finally, phase 4 is the artist section where you can learn from some of the most famous and best bass players in the world. The video lessons in this section are really something special!

Artist Works

Artist works is a very high-end subscription platform that offers bass lessons with some of the world’s best instructors.

You can learn bass guitar techniques with Nathan East or study jazz harmony with John Pattitucci.

Also, all plans are personalized to the students.

Here, Artist Works does a great job of rivaling the quality of teacher that Scott’s Bass Lessons delivers.

There’s a really wide range of topics and teachers to choose from, you can study at your own pace and all the video lessons and teaching materials are of really high quality.

Fender Play Bass

This is the bass guitar branch of the now infamous teaching app and website Fender Play.

Fender first branched out into video lessons with Fender Play which was aimed solely at guitarists but they have since added bass guitar lessons to their roster.

Fender play is aimed mostly at beginners. Whilst it does do a good job of getting beginners to play songs, it does feel a little impersonal at times.

The video lessons are really well produced and there’s clearly a lot of time and effort that’s gone into making their teaching platform.

However, they don’t have the big names on their teaching roster that platforms like Artistworks of Scott’s Bass Lessons do.

By all means, check Fender Play Bass out.

If you’re a casual bass player then it could be perfect for you.

But, if you’re hoping to make serious and lasting improvements then another online course might be best for you.

Bassbuzz

Bassbuzz was founded by Josh Fosgreen who is a very friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic bass player and teacher.

Josh has a great YouTube channel which I’d highly recommend subscribing too as it will give you an idea of his teaching style and the type of subjects he tends to cover.

Many people find his online bass lessons really well constructed with a clear syllabus and a strong emphasis on the fundamental skills that really matter like scales, technique and rhythm.

The bass guitar lessons cover all styles of music from rock, pop, blues, prog and even country so no matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find something of value at bass buzz.

Daric Bennett

Daric Bennett is another YouTube giant who has started his own online bass lessons academy.

Daric’s background in gospel, soul, R&B and funk really shines through and his teaching methods and style make for incredibly clear and engaging lessons.

All ability levels are catered for and he also has a YouTube channel that allows you to sample what he has to offer free of charge before putting your money down.

What I like most of all is that Daric is also a seasoned and active professional bass player.

This means, as a student of his, you’re getting advice from someone who’s really been there and done it.

What could be better?

TrueFire

TrueFire provides a monthly subscription for unlimited streaming access for the entire course.

The courses are not available on YouTube, but you can pay more to get 1-on-1 instruction via video calling services like Skype or Zoom.

A lot of the lessons are very specialized which means this site is one for more intermediate or even advanced players.

Sadly, this means Truefire isn’t the best option for beginners but, if you’re a bass newbie don’t panic. There are plenty more great options out there for you.

Scott’s Bass Lessons

When a student learns through the internet it is important to feel comfortable with the person who appears in the video. If they don’t they’ll likely hit the exit button very quickly, and try another alternative.

For this reason, Scott Devine of Scotts Bass Lessons is one of my favorite instructors.

He is an excellent teacher who breaks down complex concepts and makes them easy to understand for bassists of all levels.

I also like that he offers a wide range of online courses, from beginner to advanced, so you can always find something new to learn.

If all that wasn’t enough then you should consider that the SBL academy brings in the best bass teachers from all over the world.

Gary Willis works with them, as does Danny Mo Morris, Michael League, Todd Johnson and Ariane Cap to name just a few.

It’s also the biggest bass tuition website in the world. No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find it with Scott’s Bass Lessons.

Udemy

Udemy has a huge range of online courses covering every topic imaginable, and bass guitar is no exception. You can find some great deals on Udemy, with many courses being offered for less than $20.

One thing to keep in mind with Udemy is that the quality of the courses can vary greatly, so it’s important to do your research before enrolling in any course.

However, if you find a good one, you can save a lot of money by taking online bass lessons on Udemy.

TalkingBass

Talking bass is one of the oldest bass guitar lessons sites on the internet.

Started by bassist Mark Smith in the early 2000’s, it boasts a wide range of free lessons and paid content.

The free stuff comes in the form of Mark’s excellent YouTube channel and the paid content is housed on his site talkingbass.net.

Mark’s teaching style is really clear and direct which makes it ideal for beginners.

Also, the YouTube channel that accompanies the site gives students a chance to sample what he has to offer before putting their money down in a paid course.

Studybass

Studybass is a completely free online bass lessons website that has a load of great content.

It’s a very well respected site and, since it’s inception in 2003, it’s built up a huge range of bass guitar-related content including bass lessons, advice on gigs and how to care for your bass.

If you’re after free lessons then this is definitely worth a look!

Berklee Online

Berklee is one of the most respected music schools in the world and their bass department has it’s own courses online.

These courses are expensive but you do get to study with some of the best teachers in the world from one of the best schools.

You can be sure the teaching material will be of really high quality and that the syllabus will be really well laid out.

Also, no matter what level of player you are, Berklee online will have online bass lessons for you.

Bass Players Study Group

This is my own humble offering to the online bass lessons market.

The idea behind the bass players study group was to create an online teaching community that brings together the best of in-person teaching, a structured syllabus and the affordability of online lessons.

Each month the syllabus of the group focuses on a different topic such as theory, technique or scales.

And each week a new exercise PDF is emailed out to you.

Then, later in the week, there’s a live bass class in the member’s only Facebook group where you’re able to ask questions, post videos of yourself playing for feedback or swap tips and advice with other members of the group.

It’s either $11 a month or $97 a year and you can try your first month for only $1!

YouTube Bass Lessons

When it comes to online bass lessons, YouTube is one of the most popular options.

It can be a great resource for learning, with a wide variety of videos to choose from.

However, there are also some drawbacks to using YouTube for learning bass guitar.

The biggest pro for online bass guitar lessons is that they’re affordable- most lessons are free! This is a great option for players on a tight budget.

Another pro is that there’s a huge variety of lessons available, from beginner to advanced levels. You can find just about any style of music you’re interested in and learn how to play it.

The main con for online bass guitar lessons is that they can be difficult to follow. There can be a lot of distractions when you’re trying to learn from a video (I’m looking at you Facebook), and it can be difficult to keep track of what you’re supposed to be doing.

If you’re not careful, you might end up spending more time watching videos than actually practicing.

When looking for online bass guitar lessons, you’ll likely stumble upon a variety of websites that offer free content. While this can be a great way to learn the basics, it’s important to be aware of the pros and cons of learning bass in this way.

Here are some more pros and cons about learning bass through YouTube.

PROS:

– Free content is often offered by some of the best bassists in the world.

– You can learn at your own pace.

– Lessons are easily accessible online.

CONS:

– Quality of content can vary greatly from one instructor to the next.

– It can be difficult to find quality lessons amongst all the noise.

– You don’t get the personalised attention that you might receive from a paid instructor.

What should a beginner bassist learn?

There is no definitive answer as everyone has different priorities, interests and will want to learn the bass for different reasons.

However, we generally recommend that beginners start by learning the basics- how to hold the instrument, how to tune it, and some basic chords. After that, they can move on to learning songs and melodies. Finally, they can focus on techniques like slap bass or fretless bass.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best way to learn bass varies from person to person.

However, I recommend that beginners start by learning the basics of reading music and understanding chords.

After that, they should focus on developing their technique and learning songs. It can take some people months or even years to become proficient at playing bass guitar. That being said, it is possible to learn basic skills in a relatively short amount of time – 3 months – if you’re willing to put in the work.
